A Benediction for Election Day

“Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save.” – Psalm 146:3

This is a truth I constantly need to be reminded of, perhaps especially during election season. I am very grateful to live in a country where I have the ability to vote, but as a Christian my hope and security does not lie in any nation or president (thank God!). It is not in any prince of this world or in the people or institutions they govern.

My hope is found in one prince and one prince only: and that is the Prince of Peace. He is the everlasting one, Lord over all creation, who rules over every human affair and institution. He is a rock. Unshakeable, unchanging, the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. His love is relentless. His mercy is unending. His throne is established. His kingdom is forever.

So no matter who is elected today and no matter what happens tomorrow, my footing is secure, my heart is full and I have nothing to fear! No matter who you vote for today or whether you vote at all, may God seal this on our hearts and unite us around the table as the brothers and sisters we are.

P.S. If you are in the Lincoln area and would like to join us, tonight we are having an Election Night Communion Service at Mosaic. Whether or not you call Mosaic home, we’d love you have you as we remember what unites us together, what kingdom we are a part of and where our hope lies.
