In the spring of 2010, my wife Megan and I loaded everything we owned onto a small U-Haul trailer in Los Angeles, packed up our two young daughters, and prepared to make the long trek to Lincoln, NE with the dream of catalyzing a movement of God’s grace there.
We didn’t know what we were doing. Almost five years later I’m still not sure we know what we’re doing. But we took a risk, put it all on the line, believing that Jesus was still in the business of changing lives and building his church.
Months later roughly ten of us met in a living room to dream together for the first time. Over the next several months, that team grew to fifteen, and then to twenty, and then to thirty, and then to over forty people committed to together bring the light of the gospel to a dark and hurting world. During those months we worked hard and we prayed harder. It was the most exciting and terrifying thing most of us had ever done.
Then on March 6, 2011, we officially launched Mosaic Lincoln.
Since launching five years ago, we have had the incredible privilege of seeing hundreds of people come to experience the grace and truth and life that is possible in Jesus, many for the first time. We have seen atheists surrender their lives to Christ. We have seen Buddhists get baptized. We have seen Muslims get connected in life groups. We have seen burnt out pastors and missionaries heal and get back on their feet. Believe it or not, we have even seen recovering Baptists come back to church! (I kid, I kid. Love you, Baptists!)
It’s been an incredible ride. It’s daunting. It’s hard. Truthfully, most weeks I still feel completely in over my head. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I love my city. I love our church. And I believe God is just getting started with us. I can’t wait to see what God has in store for Mosaic and the city of Lincoln in the months and years to come.
If you’re in the Lincoln area and you don’t have a church home, we’d be honored to have you as our guest at Mosaic.
